What is Pulsatile Tinnitus?

The most ignored and neglected problem at any point in time for a person is a hearing problem. There are many hearing problems commonly caused irrespective of the age and surroundings. One such problem is Pulsatile tinnitus.

How does tinnitus differ from pulsatile tinnitus?

Tinnitus is sensation of hearing a ringing sound even in absence of external noise in contrast pulsatile tinnitus is hearing a rhythmic sound in the ear which coordinates with the heart beat of the patient. 

What causes pulsatile tinnitus?

Change in blood flow in the blood vassals causes pulsatile tinnitus. The blood vassals that are in the head and neck region are mostly the root cause of this problem. The blood flow in the vassals when experienced with increase or decrease in blood flow all of a sudden it causes pulsatile tinnitus.

Common causes

  • Irregular blood vessels 

  • High blood pressure

  • Stress

  • Overactive thyroid gland

  • Head and neck tumors

  • Ear abnormalities

  • Sinus wall abnormalities

Symptoms 

Experiencing rhythmic sound in the ear which is in synch with the heart beat which is quiet disturbing causes sleeplessness and irritation. This might also cause chest pain or even other problems which cause heart attack.

Diagnosis 

Pulsatile tinnitus is diagnosed in many ways to find out the main root cause

  • Ultra sound 

  • Magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]

  • Magnetic resonance angiography [MRA]

  • Computerized tomography[CT] 

Treatment 

If the specific cause is identified for the problem then problem specific treatment can be given in the expert’s guidance.
